Interactive Brokers' API costs nothing to use: IBKR states that its trading API "is available to all IBKR clients free of cost"1. What a quant pays for is commissions and market data, and market data through the API has three conditions: an IBKR Pro account, at least USD 500 of equity on top of the subscription cost, and a Level 1 subscription for most instruments, because free on-platform data in TWS does not flow to the API234. Throughput is capped at market-data lines ÷ 2 requests per second, 50 by default5. All of this was read from IBKR's documentation and pricing pages on 2026-10-11. Compare brokers in the Broker API Comparator.

What does the IBKR API cost?

Cost item Detail
API access Free to all IBKR clients1
Account type for API market data IBKR Pro3
Minimum equity for data USD 500 for individual accounts, plus the subscription cost4
Level 1 data Required for most securities through the API; forex and crypto need none2
Example subscriptions US Securities Snapshot and Futures Value Bundle USD 10/month; OPRA Top of Book (L1) USD 1.50/month6
Commission waivers Bundle waived at USD 30 of monthly commissions; OPRA L1 at USD 206
Billing Once per calendar month, not pro-rated7

The waivers are not cumulative: IBKR applies commissions to the highest-priced eligible service first, so USD 30 of commissions waives the USD 10 bundle but not the OPRA fee as well6. Commission schedules vary by account type and volume and are not reduced to one number here.

Why doesn't my free TWS data show up in the API?

Because exchanges license on-platform and off-platform display differently. IBKR's docs explain that data provided free inside Trader Workstation "does not provide data via API or 3rd Party platform", and give the example of a Hong Kong L1 bundle listed at HKD 0/month for TWS beside a paid HKD 130/month bundle that also covers the API8. Before building, check that each market you need has an API-eligible subscription in Client Portal and that Market Data API access is enabled there3.

What is the API rate limit?

Requests per second equal your market-data lines divided by 2, so 50 per second on the default 100 lines and 100 per second on 200 lines; FIX through IB Gateway allows 250 messages per second5. Over the limit, TWS either rejects with error 100 and ends the API session after three violations, or paces requests automatically, depending on a Global Configuration setting9. Historical bars of 30 seconds or less add their own pacing rules; the full spec is in IBKR TWS API Rate Limits 2026.

Which API surface should I use?

  • TWS API (socket): the most complete path; needs TWS or IB Gateway running, with the pacing rules above.
  • Web API (REST): IBKR's REST interface for trades, portfolio data, market data and contract information, with brokerage-session authentication1.
  • FIX: order flow at institutional scale; the 250 messages per second figure applies through IB Gateway5.

Where does IBKR fit?

  • Multi-asset, international or futures strategies: IBKR's coverage is the reason to accept the gateway and subscription overhead.
  • US-equities-only solo operator: Alpaca's REST API and flat 200 requests/minute are simpler; see Alpaca vs Interactive Brokers API 2026.
  • Light trader: below the waiver thresholds you pay the data fees, so budget them explicitly.

Verified figures

The free API statement, the IBKR Pro and USD 500 requirements, the Level 1 rule, the forex and crypto exemption, the example subscription prices and waiver thresholds, monthly non-pro-rated billing, the TWS-versus-API data distinction and the rate limit were read from IBKR's documentation and market-data pricing page on 2026-10-11.

Frequently asked questions

Does Interactive Brokers charge for API access?
No. IBKR's Web API documentation says its trading API is available to all IBKR clients free of cost. You pay commissions and any market-data subscriptions, which for API use require an IBKR Pro account and at least USD 500 of equity plus the subscription cost (read 2026-10-11).
What is the Interactive Brokers API rate limit?
Market-data lines divided by 2 requests per second: 50 per second on the default 100 lines, 100 on 200 lines. FIX through IB Gateway allows 250 messages per second. TWS either rejects excess requests with error 100 or paces them, depending on a setting.
How much do IBKR market-data subscriptions cost for API use?
It depends on the markets. Examples from IBKR's pricing page: the US Securities Snapshot and Futures Value Bundle is USD 10/month, waived at USD 30 of monthly commissions, and OPRA Top of Book (L1) is USD 1.50/month, waived at USD 20. Forex and crypto need no subscription.
Why is market data free in TWS but not through the API?
Exchanges license on-platform and off-platform data separately. IBKR's docs note that free TWS data bundles do not provide data via the API or third-party platforms, so API use needs the paid, API-eligible subscription.
